More Than a Stay
Six things worth doing from Masinagudi, described as they are rather than as a brochure would have them. Most of them start early.
Everything Here Is Set by the Forest, Not by Us
Safari is run by the forest department. Walking depends on what is currently permitted. Birds turn up at dawn regardless of your plans. What a good property can do is get you into the right place at the right hour and tell you the truth about the rest.

Wildlife Safari
Forest department safaris into Mudumalai and Bandipur, timed for the two hours at each end of the day when the forest comes alive.

Not a schedule — a shape. It works because the wildlife and the light both cooperate at the same two ends of the day.
Before Sunrise
Leave for safari or walk the forest edge with a guide. Tea first, breakfast later.
Mid-morning
Back for a proper breakfast. Birds are still active in the garden — this is when most guests get their best sightings without trying.
Middle of the Day
Do nothing. It is hot, the forest is quiet, and the road to Ooty is a better afternoon than a midday one.
Late Afternoon
Theppakadu, the Moyar valley, a viewpoint, or the second safari slot. Be back before dark.
Evening
Fire, food and an early night, because tomorrow starts before sunrise again.
Things That Are Not Negotiable
No Night Driving Through the Reserve
The highways through Mudumalai and Bandipur close to traffic at night. Plan arrival and departure in daylight.
Stay Seated on Safari
Please keep inside the vehicle, stay seated and keep voices low. Quiet vehicles see far more than noisy ones, so it works in your favour too.
Please Never Feed Wildlife
Monkeys around the village included, and elephants most of all. An animal that learns to approach people for food usually comes to harm — keeping our distance is the kindest thing we can do for them.
No Drones over Protected Areas
Photography inside reserves is governed by the forest department. Check before you fly or film anything.
Carry Your Rubbish Back Out
There is no collection in the forest, so whatever goes in with you comes back out — a small thing that keeps this place as lovely as you found it.
Planning Your Days
What is there to do in Masinagudi besides safari?
Guided walks at the forest edge, bird watching, the elephant camp at Theppakadu, the Moyar river valley, viewpoints, a hill temple, and a day trip up to Ooty.
Do I need to book experiences in advance?
Safari is limited and worth planning for. Walks and other property-arranged activities can usually be organised a day ahead — tell your host the night before.
Are the experiences suitable for children?
Most are. Safari works better for children in shorter stretches, and the garden, campfire and elephant camp tend to hold attention best.
