Mudumalai Tiger Reserve
The reserve that Masinagudi sits beside, and the reason most people come.
- Type
- Tiger reserve and national park
- State
- Tamil Nadu
- Adjoins
- Bandipur, Wayanad and the wider Nilgiri Biosphere
- From Masinagudi
- Short drive — about 9 km to a safari point
Mudumalai occupies the junction where Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala meet, and it connects to Bandipur in the north and Wayanad in the west. That continuity is the point: this is not an island of forest but part of one of the largest wild elephant ranges in the country.
What the Landscape Is Like
It changes fast. Dry thorn near Moyar, teak and bamboo through the middle, and wetter forest toward the western edge. Grassland openings hold gaur and chital in numbers; the river courses hold everything else at some point in the day.
Visiting
Access is arranged through the forest department, who set the safari timings, entry points, ticketing and permitted vehicles, and these do vary through the year. We keep track of the current arrangement and will gladly confirm it for you before you set off.
Getting There from Masinagudi
Both Avenue Tree properties are a short drive from the reserve's Masinagudi side. Aranyasun lists about 9 km to a Mudumalai safari point. Roads are hill roads — allow more time than the distance suggests.
Please Plan Around the Night Closure
The highway through the reserve closes to traffic overnight so that elephants can move freely. Do build it into your arrival and departure — it is the one detail that catches visitors out, and a little planning turns it into a non-event. Tell us your route and we will help you time it.

Where to Base Yourself
Both Avenue Tree properties are in Masinagudi, which is the practical base for this part of the landscape — close enough to the gates for an early start, far enough from the highway to be quiet.
