Birds in the canopy of Western Ghats forest near Masinagudi
Experience

Bird Watching

The Nilgiri foothills sit on a genuine birding gradient — dry scrub to moist forest inside a few kilometres.

You do not need to go far. A garden chair, a cup of tea and an hour after sunrise will produce more species than most people expect, because the habitat changes quickly here: thorn and scrub near Moyar, deciduous forest around Masinagudi, and wetter, taller forest as the road climbs toward Ooty.

What to Look For

Malabar grey hornbill, green bee-eater, Indian roller, white-cheeked barbet, racket-tailed drongo, jungle fowl and a long list of raptors over open ground. Serious lists are built on the edges — where scrub meets forest, and near water.

Best Hours

The first two hours after sunrise, then again in the last hour of light. Midday is for sitting under a tree.

Seasons

Winter brings migrants; the months after the rains are green and active. Conditions vary year to year — ask the property what the last few weeks have been like.

Watching Kindly

Please skip call playback near nesting birds, keep away from nests and stay on the paths. Give them room and they will carry on with their morning — which is when the best watching happens anyway.
