Getting to Masinagudi
The routes people actually use, the two things that catch them out, and what to confirm before you leave.
Masinagudi is reached by road. There is no railway station in the village and no airport nearby — every approach ends with a drive, and two of them end with a ghat road.
The One Rule That Matters
The forest gates close overnight. The Bandipur and Thorarapalli gates on the Mudumalai border shut at 9:00 PM and reopen at 6:00 AM, and no traffic passes between those hours. This single fact reorganises most travel plans to Masinagudi: a late departure from Bangalore ends at a barrier rather than at a resort. Build in a generous daylight margin, and confirm the current timings before you set out — they are set by the Forest and Police departments, not by us.
From Bangalore
The standard route runs Bangalore to Mysore, on through Gundlupet, then south into Bandipur and Mudumalai and down to Masinagudi. Most of it is good highway; the last part is forest road with enforced speed limits and animals that use it. Mysore is the natural place to break the journey.
From Mysore
Shorter version of the same road — Gundlupet, Bandipur, Mudumalai, Masinagudi. The night closure still applies.
From Coimbatore
Usually via Mettupalayam and up to Ooty, then down the ghat to Masinagudi. This approach ends on one of the two hill roads, so the choice of route matters more than the distance does.
From Chennai
A long drive. Most travellers route via Coimbatore or via Bangalore and pick up one of the approaches above. This is a two-stage journey rather than a single day for most people.
From Ooty: Kalhatti or Gudalur
The Kalhatti road drops sharply through a series of tight hairpins and is much the shorter of the two. It is not suitable for large vehicles, and drivers who are not comfortable on steep narrow ghat roads should not attempt it. The Gudalur route is longer and considerably easier. Conditions on both change with the monsoon — ask locally which is currently better before committing.
Driving Inside the Reserves
Speed limits are enforced, and they exist because elephants cross without warning. Please keep moving rather than stopping for photographs, stay in the vehicle, and never offer food. If an elephant is on the road, simply wait at a distance and let it take its time — it is one of the loveliest ways to meet one.
Getting Around Once You Are Here
You will want a vehicle. Distances between the village, the forest gates, Theppakadu and the Moyar valley are short but not walkable, and there is no reliable local transport network for visitors. Both properties can advise on drivers.

Forest Gate Timings
The Bandipur and Thorarapalli (Mudumalai border) gates close at 9:00 PM and reopen at 6:00 AM. Passage is not permitted between those hours. Plan to arrive before 9:00 PM — arriving later means waiting at a barrier until morning.
The Nilgiris Plastic Ban
Single-use plastics are banned across the district — polythene bags, 1–2 litre plastic water bottles and plastic-packaged soft drinks included. Fines run from ₹500 to ₹10,000. Carry reusable bottles or 5-litre cans instead.
Liquor Across the State Border
Do not carry alcohol across the Tamil Nadu / Karnataka border. It may be confiscated at the check post.
Restricted Routes
Some approaches — the Thalai Kundah route among them — require a local Nilgiris ID. Check that your intended route is open to you before you commit to it.
Before You Set Off
Arrive in Daylight
Non-negotiable if your route crosses Bandipur or Mudumalai.
Fuel Before the Forest
Fill up in Gundlupet or Ooty rather than assuming there is a pump on the far side.

Mobile coverage is patchy through the forest sections and on the ghat.
Call the Property from the Turn-off
The last few kilometres are on small lanes. It is faster to be talked in than to guess.
Carry Warm Layers
Masinagudi is warm; the ghat and Ooty are not. Evenings here still cool off.
