Trekking
Short, guided hill walks on permitted routes — quietly spectacular, and easier than they look.
Walking these hills is one of the real pleasures of a stay here, and it comes with a little more structure than most visitors expect. Much of this landscape is protected, so only certain routes are open, and which ones changes through the year. Ask us and we will point you at something wonderful that is open this week.
Routes That Are Currently Open
Do check with us rather than following a trail description found online — permissions change through the year, and some of what circulates was never open to visitors. We will pair you with a local guide who knows exactly where to go.
Difficulty
Most walks here are short and moderate rather than technical. The heat, the gradient and the loose surface do the work.
Staying Safe and Enjoying It
Elephants and gaur use these hills too. Walk as a group, in daylight, and if your guide decides to turn back, trust them — they will have read something you did not, and there is always another route.
What to Carry
Water, closed shoes with grip, a hat and something with sleeves. Do bring a reusable bottle — single-use plastic is banned across the Nilgiris, and whatever you carry in comes back out with you.
