There is no single best way to reach Masinagudi. The right journey depends on where you start, how you travel, which roads are currently open to you and what time you will arrive. Masinagudi has no railway station or airport, so every journey ends with a drive, and most approaches cross a forest highway that closes at night.
This guide compares the journey from Bangalore, Chennai, Mysore and Coimbatore. It covers the routes, transport choices and road-access rules for each city, and how to plan your arrival at Labdhi Resorts or AranyaSun, Avenue Tree's two properties in Masinagudi. For more detail, see our Bangalore to Masinagudi drive guide and the travel information page.
Distances below are the approximate figures the two properties publish. Journey times depend on traffic, weather, roadworks and the forest gates, so treat them as a guide.
- Bangalore and Mysore: drive via Gundlupet, Bandipur and Theppakadu.
- Coimbatore: via Ooty and Gudalur, or via Sathyamangalam and Bandipur.
- Chennai: a two-stage journey through Bengaluru, Mysuru or Coimbatore.
- Forest gates: Bandipur and Thorarapalli close from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
- Kalhatti road: closed to tourist vehicles. Masinagudi itself is open.

Quick Comparison
How the four journeys compare. The sections below cover each one in detail.
| Departure city | Route or connection | Transport choices | Main planning point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangalore | By road via Mysuru, Gundlupet, Bandipur and Theppakadu. | Own car or hired cab; train or bus to Mysuru, then road. | Clear the Bandipur–Mudumalai forest stretch before the 9:00 PM gate closure. |
| Chennai | Two stages: reach Bengaluru, Mysuru or Coimbatore first, then continue by road. | Train, flight or bus to a connecting city, then car or cab. | Leave a generous buffer between your arrival and the road leg. |
| Mysore | By road via Gundlupet, Bandipur and Theppakadu. | Own car or hired cab; buses on the Mysuru–Ooty highway via Theppakadu. | The whole drive runs through the gated forest section. |
| Coimbatore | Via Mettupalayam, Ooty and Gudalur, or via Sathyamangalam, Chamarajanagar, Gundlupet and Bandipur. | Own car or hired cab; train or bus towards Ooty, then road. | Do not use the Kalhatti road, which is closed to tourist vehicles. |
Bangalore to Masinagudi
The Road Route
From Bangalore, the usual route runs to Mysuru, then on to Gundlupet. From there the road enters Bandipur Tiger Reserve and crosses into Mudumalai, reaching Theppakadu. Masinagudi is a short drive on from Theppakadu. Both properties put the journey at about 250 km and around five hours, without stops.
The forest section is the part to plan around. The Bandipur and Thorarapalli gates close at 9:00 PM and reopen at 6:00 AM, and no traffic passes overnight. Leaving Bangalore late in the day, especially on a Friday, can leave you waiting at a barrier until morning. Mysuru is the natural place to stop for a meal. Fill up before Gundlupet, because there is forest beyond it.

Private Car or Hired Cab
Driving yourself gives you the most flexibility. If you hire a cab with a driver, confirm these points before you book:
- The driver knows the route via Bandipur and Theppakadu, and will not take the Kalhatti road from Ooty.
- The vehicle is permitted to travel from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu.
- Where the driver will stay overnight. Labdhi Resorts has no driver accommodation on site, so ask the team to suggest somewhere nearby. At AranyaSun, ask about arrangements for your driver when you book.
Train or Bus, Then Road
There is no direct train to Masinagudi. Trains and buses run frequently between Bengaluru and Mysuru, and from Mysuru you can continue by hired car (see Mysore to Masinagudi).
Some buses between Bengaluru or Mysuru and Ooty use the highway through Bandipur and Theppakadu, but routings vary. Before booking, check with the operator that your bus runs via Theppakadu and stops there. From Theppakadu you will need a car for the last stretch, so arrange it in advance. Labdhi Resorts lists Theppakadu as about 9 km from the property.
Flying into Bengaluru? Kempegowda International Airport is about 284 km from Labdhi Resorts, so plan an onward drive of most of a day.
For timing, stops and driving through the reserve, read our Bangalore to Masinagudi drive guide.
Chennai to Masinagudi
From Chennai, plan the journey in two stages. First reach Bengaluru, Mysuru or Coimbatore, then continue to Masinagudi by road on one of the routes in this guide. Neither property publishes a figure for Chennai, so check the distance and time for your chosen route before you set out.
By Road
It is a long drive. You can go via Bengaluru and Mysuru, joining the Bangalore route, or via Coimbatore, joining the Coimbatore routes. Many travellers break the journey overnight so that the last stretch, including the forest gates, falls in daylight.
By Train, Then Road
- To Mysuru. The Chennai Central–Mysuru Shatabdi Express (12007) runs via Bengaluru. From Mysuru, continue by road via Bandipur.
- To Coimbatore or Mettupalayam. The overnight Nilgiri Express (12671) runs from Chennai Central to Mettupalayam, calling at Coimbatore. From there, continue by road via Ooty and Gudalur.
Check timings and running days on Indian Railways' NTES service or IRCTC before you book, because schedules change.
By Air, Then Road
Flights connect Chennai with Bengaluru and Coimbatore. From either airport, the rest of the journey is by road, so check current flight schedules with the airlines and book your road transfer before you fly.
By Bus
Long-distance buses run from Chennai to Bengaluru and Coimbatore. Treat these as the first stage, and plan the onward journey from there.
Connection Buffers
Leave a generous margin between arriving in your connecting city and starting the road leg. A late flight or train can push the drive past the 9:00 PM forest-gate closure. Arriving in the morning, for example on an overnight train, gives you the most daylight for the drive.
Mysore to Masinagudi
The Road Route
Mysore is the closest of the four cities. The route runs south to Gundlupet, through Bandipur and Mudumalai to Theppakadu, then on to Masinagudi. Labdhi Resorts puts it at about 90 km and 2 to 2.5 hours. AranyaSun gives 90 to 100 km and about 2.5 hours.
Car or Cab
Most of this drive runs through the gated forest section, so the 9:00 PM closure applies to the whole journey. If you are arriving by train at Mysuru, which Labdhi Resorts lists as about 100 km from the property, book your car in advance and allow for the drive in daylight.
Buses and the Last Stretch
Buses between Mysuru and Ooty run on this highway and pass Theppakadu, but check with the operator that your bus stops there. From Theppakadu, you will need a car to reach the property. Masinagudi has its own bus stand, about 2.3 km from Labdhi Resorts and about 3 km from AranyaSun, served by local buses. Check current times locally rather than relying on a connection.
AranyaSun's directions page lists local drivers you can contact, or ask the team to suggest someone when you book.
Forest-Road Access
Plan the drive in daylight, keep to the speed limits inside the reserves and do not stop for photographs on the highway. Once you reach Masinagudi, there is no need to continue towards Kalhatti. That road is closed to tourist vehicles (see road access).
Coimbatore to Masinagudi
Two Permitted Routes
AranyaSun publishes two routes from Coimbatore, both taking around five and a half hours:
- Via Mettupalayam, Coonoor, Ooty, Gudalur and Theppakadu (about 163 km). This climbs the ghat to Ooty, then runs down via Gudalur to Theppakadu and Masinagudi.
- Via Sathyamangalam, Chamarajanagar, Gundlupet, Bandipur and Theppakadu (about 217 km). This avoids Ooty but crosses the Bandipur forest section, so the 9:00 PM gate closure applies. It also climbs the Dhimbam ghat in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, which has had its own time restrictions. We could not confirm the current hours from an official source, so check locally before you choose this route.
The Kalhatti Road Is Not an Option
From Ooty, a map app may suggest the much shorter Kalhatti ghat road down to Masinagudi. The Nilgiris district administration has closed it to tourist vehicles. AranyaSun also warns that a shorter route via Thalaikundha passes a check post that only admits vehicles with a local Nilgiris ID or TN-43 registration. Take the Gudalur road instead.
Car or Cab
Ghat roads take longer than the distance suggests. Allow for hairpins, slow traffic and stops, and confirm with your driver which route you will take before you set off. The Gudalur–Ooty highway can be congested in the tourist season, and press reports in October 2026 described heavy traffic there after tourist vehicles were diverted from Kalhatti.
Public Transport
Coimbatore has an airport and a railway station, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty. From Ooty, buses run towards Gudalur, and local services link the Gudalur and Masinagudi area. Times change, so check them at the bus stand and arrange a car for the last stretch to the property.
Weather and Diversions
Monsoon rain can bring landslides, closures and diversions on the ghat roads. Check conditions on the day you travel, and tell the property your route and expected arrival time so the team knows when to expect you.
Road Access and Entry Requirements
Masinagudi is open to visitors. The restrictions below apply to particular roads and vehicles, not to the destination itself.
Travel information checked on 26 October 2026. Rules on these roads change, sometimes at short notice. Check the official sources linked below shortly before you travel.
The Kalhatti (Masinagudi–Ooty) Road
The Nilgiris district administration's press release No. 220 (published 29 April 2026, updated 11 May 2026) states that tourist vehicles are not permitted on the Kalhatti mountain road. Only TN-43 registered vehicles and local vehicles may use it. In September 2026, a press report described a limited daily allowance for tourist vehicles, checked at Mavanahalla. We could not find an official order confirming it, so plan your route via Gudalur.
Forest-Gate Timings
Both properties publish the same timings. The Bandipur gate and the Thorarapalli gate on the Mudumalai border close at 9:00 PM and reopen at 6:00 AM, and no traffic passes overnight. This affects every route via Bandipur, including those from Bangalore, Mysore and Coimbatore via Sathyamangalam. The timings are set by the authorities, so confirm them before you travel.
The Nilgiris E-Pass
Masinagudi is in the Nilgiris district, which introduced an e-pass for vehicles entering the district in 2024 following a Madras High Court order. The Nilgiris district website links to the Tamil Nadu e-pass portal, and both properties advise travellers to register before they travel. We could not find a current official notice setting out who must apply, when or for which vehicles, so check the portal shortly before your journey and keep a copy of your pass with you.
Other Rules That Apply on the Way
- Single-use plastic is banned across the Nilgiris, with fines from ₹500 to ₹10,000.
- Do not carry liquor across the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border. It may be confiscated at the check post.
The travel information page covers these rules in more detail.
Before You Travel
- Recheck road access and forest-gate timings for your route. The Kalhatti road is closed to tourist vehicles and the Thalaikundha route is limited to local vehicles; the Bandipur and Thorarapalli gates close at 9:00 PM.
- Confirm whether you need a Nilgiris e-pass. Check the e-pass portal shortly before you travel and keep a copy with you.
- Save the correct entrance pin for your property. Use the links in the next section, not a general Masinagudi search.
- Verify tickets, pickup points and onward connections. Confirm train, bus or flight times, where you will be dropped and who is driving the last stretch.
- Share your expected arrival time. Tell the property your route and when you expect to arrive.
- Confirm check-in and meal arrangements. Especially if you will arrive late in the day.
- Keep your booking details accessible. Mobile coverage can be patchy in the forest and on the ghat roads, so save them offline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Reach Masinagudi Without a Car?
Yes, but it takes more planning. Masinagudi has no railway station or airport, so every journey ends by road. You can take a train to Mysuru, Bengaluru or Coimbatore, a flight to Bengaluru or Coimbatore, or a bus on the Mysuru–Ooty highway, and then a hired car for the last stretch. Arrange that final transfer before you set out.
Which Route Should I Use from My Departure City?
From Bangalore and Mysore, drive via Gundlupet, Bandipur and Theppakadu. From Coimbatore, go via Mettupalayam, Ooty and Gudalur, or via Sathyamangalam, Chamarajanagar, Gundlupet and Bandipur. From Chennai, travel to Bengaluru, Mysuru or Coimbatore first and continue on one of those routes.
Should I Follow the Shortest Route Shown on a Map?
Not without checking it. Map apps may suggest the Kalhatti ghat road between Ooty and Masinagudi, which the Nilgiris district administration has closed to tourist vehicles, or a route via Thalaikundha that is limited to local vehicles. Check that every road on your route is open to you.
What Should I Confirm Before Travelling?
Confirm the current forest-gate timings on the Bandipur and Mudumalai highway, whether you need a Nilgiris e-pass, which roads are open to tourist vehicles, your train, flight or bus times, and your check-in time. Share your expected arrival time with the property.
How Do I Obtain Directions to My Booked Property?
Call or WhatsApp the Avenue Tree team on +91 90353 15566 with your booking name, property and route. The team will confirm directions and the location pin for Labdhi Resorts or AranyaSun before you leave.
