Masinagudi is one of the few forest getaways within a day's drive of Bangalore, Mysore and Coimbatore where the family dog can come too. It is also a village on the edge of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, with elephants, gaur, deer and big cats moving through the landscape. A good trip with a pet here comes down to three things: choosing a stay that genuinely welcomes pets, planning safari days around them, and keeping them safe at the forest edge.
This guide covers all three, along with the drive, what to pack and the questions to ask before you book. Where it describes a property's pet policy, it uses only what that property publishes.
- Where to stay: AranyaSun is pet friendly. Labdhi Resorts is not.
- What pets cannot do: join safaris or enter the Mudumalai and Bandipur tiger reserves, so plan who stays with your pet.
- At the forest edge: leash outdoors, supervise at all times and stay in after dark.
- Before you book: tell the property about your pet and confirm any charge and arrangements.
Can You Bring a Pet to Masinagudi?
Yes, to the right stay. Masinagudi itself is a working village, and plenty of people drive here with their dogs. What you cannot do is take a pet into the protected forest: AranyaSun's own guidance is that pets cannot go on safaris or into the Mudumalai and Bandipur tiger reserves. Rules inside the reserves are set by the forest department and can change, so confirm the current position before you travel.
That shapes the whole trip. A pet-friendly holiday in Masinagudi is less about outings and more about the place you stay: open space for your dog, quiet evenings, and days that suit both of you.
Choosing a Pet-Friendly Stay in Masinagudi

Not every property accepts pets, so settle this first. Online listings for the area do not always agree with each other about pets, so check directly with the property rather than relying on a booking site's filter.
Of Avenue Tree's two properties in Masinagudi, only one is pet friendly:
- AranyaSun welcomes pets. It is a family-run stay of six rooms on about three-quarters of an acre of garden and lawn beside Masinagudi village, around 3 km from the bus stand and about 9 km from a Mudumalai safari point.
- Labdhi Resorts is not pet friendly. It is our wildlife-facing property with a vegetarian restaurant, and a good choice if you are travelling without a pet.
For a wider comparison of the two, see our guide to choosing a Masinagudi resort for families and couples.
AranyaSun's Pet Policy: What Is Published
AranyaSun describes itself as a proudly pet-friendly property. Here is what it publishes about pets on its hotel policies and pet-friendly stay pages, and on our AranyaSun page:
- Rooms: pets are welcome in all three room categories, not in a single designated room. These are the Garden View Room (about 144 sq. ft.), the Mountain View Room (about 192 sq. ft.) and the Garden View with Loft (about 250 sq. ft.).
- Grounds: pets are welcome across the grounds, which include open lawns.
- Supervision: pets must be supervised and well behaved.
- Responsibility: owners look after cleanliness and the comfort of other guests and of the wildlife that shares the land.
- Never unattended: please don't leave your pet alone in the room.
- Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner can be served at the property, so you don't have to leave your pet behind to go out and eat. Agree meal arrangements when you book.
- Parking: free on-site parking makes it easier to unload crates, beds and bowls.
What to Confirm Before You Book
Some details are not published, so ask about them rather than assuming:
- Charges: any pet charge is confirmed with your booking, along with current room rates.
- Size and number: tell the property your pet's size and how many pets are coming, so it can confirm the current arrangements.
- Type of pet: the property's guidance is written with dogs in mind. If you are travelling with a different animal, ask first.
- Documents: no requirement is published. Carry your pet's vaccination record and any medical notes anyway, and ask whether the property needs to see them.
Every pet is different, so describe yours honestly when you enquire, including its temperament around people and other animals. That helps the property tell you whether the stay will suit it.
Safari Days and the Tiger Reserves

A safari is the main reason many people come to Masinagudi, and it is the one part of the trip your pet cannot join. Safaris run inside the reserves, and pets are not allowed on them. The simplest plan is to take turns: one person goes on the jeep safari while the other stays with your pet, then you swap on another day.
Book safaris in advance and tell the property your plans when you book, so it can suggest timings that work around your pet. Our Mudumalai safari guide explains how safaris work and what to expect, and our wildlife safari page covers the options from Masinagudi.
The days don't have to be split, though. Bird watching from the garden in the first hours after sunrise is a quiet morning you can share with your dog. Our guide to bird watching in Masinagudi has ideas.
Keeping Your Pet Safe at the Forest Edge
Masinagudi is not a city break. Wild animals move through the area, including at night, and a pet unused to that can be at real risk. In a 2026 study of villages inside Mudumalai by the Wildlife Institute of India, most residents surveyed said that leopards often carry off dogs. A few simple rules keep your pet and the wildlife safe:
- Keep your dog on a leash outdoors and supervised at all times.
- Stay within the property after dark, and don't walk forest roads at dawn or dusk.
- Keep pet food indoors and secured, because it attracts wildlife.
- Clean up after your pet on lawns and paths.
- Never let your dog chase or bark at wild animals, and keep it away from any you see.
Masinagudi is also forest country, so ticks are common. Use the tick and flea protection your vet recommends, and check your dog after time outdoors.
The Drive with a Pet
Most people reach Masinagudi by car, which suits travelling with a pet. There are no flights and no pet cargo. AranyaSun gives these rough drive times:
- From Bangalore: about 250 km, around 5 hours via Mysore and Bandipur.
- From Mysore: 90 to 100 km, about 2.5 hours.
- From Ooty: about 77 km, around 2.5 hours via Gudalur and Theppakadu.
The roads through the reserves close at night: the Bandipur and Thorarapalli gates shut at 9:00 PM and reopen at 6:00 AM. Build pet breaks into the first half of the drive, so you are not stopping late and racing to reach the gate. On the stretch through the forest, do not stop or let your pet out of the car. Plan breaks in towns before you reach the reserve.
Our guide to the drive from Bangalore and our travel information page cover the routes and gate timings in more detail. Afternoons in the foothills can be warm, so for comfort in the car it helps to read our guide to the best time to visit Masinagudi.
What to Pack for Your Pet
- Your pet's usual food and treats, so its diet doesn't change on holiday.
- Bowls, a leash, a spare collar and an ID tag with your phone number.
- Familiar bedding or a crate, towels and waste bags.
- Any regular medicines, tick and flea protection and your pet's vaccination record.
- Water in a 5-litre can or reusable bottles. Single-use plastic is banned across the Nilgiris, with fines of ₹500 to ₹10,000.
A Pet-Friendly Masinagudi Checklist
- Confirm that your stay accepts pets, and tell it your pet's type, size and number.
- Ask about any pet charge and documents before you pay.
- Plan safaris in turns, and book them in advance.
- Leave early enough to clear the forest gates before 9:00 PM.
- Pack food, medicines, bedding and plastic-free water.
- Keep your pet leashed, supervised and indoors after dark.
If you photograph the forest, the birds or your dog stretched out on the lawn, share them with #mudumalaiwildlife and tag @avenue_tree on Instagram. Please leave exact locations out for sensitive wildlife.
